The experiences of healthcare providers in the emergency room can be complex and challenging, particularly when it comes to paediatric palliative care. Healthcare professionals, including doctors and nurses, are tasked with providing palliative care to critically ill children and their families in a fast-paced environment, often with limited resources. They must navigate difficult ethical and emotional issues, such as managing pain and suffering, supporting families through end-of-life decisions, and addressing cultural and religious beliefs. Despite these challenges, healthcare providers strive to provide compassionate care and support to both patients and families during difficult times. The unique experiences of healthcare providers in paediatric palliative care highlight the need for greater awareness, resources, and training in this specialized area of healthcare.
Dr. Xiohara Gentica is a paediatric consultant in the Emergency Department of National Children’s Hospital, Philippines. She completed her paediatric residency in the same institution and went on to pursue her one-year clinical fellowship in paediatric palliative medicine with Two Worlds Cancer Collaboration, Canada and Hyderabad Centre for Palliative Care, India (endorsed by the RCPCH UK). Her interest is bringing to light on-the-ground challenges in a LMIC setting for the development of solutions, awareness and advocacies.
The webinar will be hosted via Zoom. Register here.
