For this session, we are honoured to have Dr Kelly Li (St George Hospital, NSW, Australia) and Dr Malama Tafuna’i (Primary Care Physician, Apia, Samoa) as our speakers!
Dr Kelly Li
Dr Kelly Li is a dual-trained nephrologist and palliative care physician based at St George Hospital in Sydney, and conjoint lecturer with the University of New South Wales. She is the clinical lead for the Kidney Supportive Care program, a multidisciplinary service integrating palliative care principles across a spectrum of CKD, dialysis, and kidney transplant patients. She has contributed as invited faculty to kidney supportive care curriculums internationally, including modules for the ISN, and educational initiatives in Australia, India, Thailand, Indonesia, and Fiji. She has authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications in this field, and convened communication skills workshops for nephrology clinicians.
Dr Malama Tafuna’i
Dr Malama Tafuna’i is a primary care physician in Samoa who has been advocating for palliative care for over 10 years. She served as clinical director of the National Kidney Foundation of Samoa (NKFS) from 2014 to 2018, during which she helped draft a palliative care pathway for the NKFS. She believes that formal palliative care services should be an integral part of kidney care in LMICs such as Samoa. She is completing a postdoc as a Global Health Emerging Scholar at Yale University, focusing on palliative care in Samoa, and is a 2026 Cynthia Goh Palliative Care Fellow. Lama has been providing palliative care in Samoa, working with the NKFS to integrate it into their current services.
