Training the Trainer Course held in Thailand

Last month, the Thai Palliative Care Society (THAPS) successfully held a three-day workshop for palliative care trainers. After this workshop, these delegates will be the trainers of palliative care service providers in their hospitals, spreading the knowledge across the country.

After the latest national health policy in 2014, one of the challenges we are facing in Thailand is how to build adequate numbers of palliative care personnel to answer society and government’s call for more services whilst maintaining the quality of care.Even though palliative care services can give patients the comprehensive care they need, it also takes a lot of time and resources from the health care team as well. Apart from taking care of normal patients and routine work, they have to go the extra mile for palliative care patients. This could often be overwhelming for the team.

Therefore, this pilot project called: ‘Training of Palliative Care Ward Nurse for Trainers’ aims to gather doctors and nurses from various districts across Thailand and train them to become palliative care trainers so that they, in turn, could further the knowledge and build more capable teams in their area.

The first day of the course emphasised the human learning process; how do people learn, effective teaching, lesson plans, and giving feedback and evaluation.

Over the last two days, the workshop moved on to the core component of the teaching programme. There were six modules in total, covering all of the aspects of the basic palliative care such as palliative care assessment, symptom management, last hours of life, communication skills, psychosocial care, and also spiritual issues.

After this workshop, there will be second meeting for feedback and evaluation of the modules and delegates. The estimated number of ward nurses that will be joining this training programme is in the several hundreds.
